Street Portrait (for and of Amparo), 2013
This was taken today on Kingsway. Amparo wanted to know the way to Trafalgar Square, so I traded the information for a photograph (well, two), and boy did she have a great smile. Thanks very much, Amparo! Hope my directions got you there and that you like your picture.

I love this street portrait because it’s fun, true and full of life. You rarely see that in street portraiture. Great, great work!
Thank you, Johannes. That’s a very nice compliment coming from you.
Ha, ha, what a smile!
Yes, totally infectious!
wonderful captured one. You are amazing. Thanks and Love, nia
Thanks so much, Nia!
Fantastic expression, Richard!!! (By the way, Amparo is an Spanish or Latin name)
Thanks very much, Santi! Yes, Amparo has a great smile doesn’t she? (Aha, yes – thanks – I didn’t have much time, so no chance to talk really).
wonderful and I could totally pull off that hat too~
Thanks very much, John. I’d love to see that.
Ah!
Yes!
Just when I think you cannot possibly make the next subject as interesting as the last one, you do. I love her. Lordy, you’re good. A portrait of her looking into the camera would have been just a nice picture of a pretty woman in a hat. You found her personality instead, as you always do. Absolutely no other photographer would have thought to take a shot of the subject looking so far to the right that her left pupil is touching her nose. It works. And HOW it works! I am grinning from ear to ear.
Wow, thanks so much, George!
That’s really nice to hear. I’m really glad it works!
She looks full of playful mischief. I love her pretty teeth.
Yes, indeed. She was really nice.
Wonderful – you’ve captured Amparo’s smiling eyes as well as her playful smile. She looks like shes looking around thinking what fun can I get up to next
Brilliant description! Thanks very much, EllaDee!
my hair used to look like her hat. Cool look.
Yes, indeed. Have you got any pictures, Terry?
That hat looks warm. It is a great smile!
Richard, do you carry around blog business cards to hand out when you take portraits?
Yes, very sensible yesterday – there was what you might call a stiff breeze. Took lots of shots of men puffing (deleted them all). Yes, she has a wonderful smile, doesn’t she. Yes, I do carry blog business cards – currently 13 different designs (shots from the blog), with the same text on the reverse. I love giving them out. Thanks for asking, Karen.
She looks thrilled – and has great lipstick, too! You make it look like a “spontaneous” shot.
I guess it sort of was spontaneous – the moment she agreed to the shot, I took it. The next shot was more formal and didn’t have the same feel. Thanks very much!
I almost want to live somewhere colder, to have such a hat. And that purse colour is fabulous too.
Yes, it’s a fabulous hat, isn’t it? It’s perishing cold here at the moment:) Thanks very much, Deanne.
I love the expression on her face.
Yes, she’s great isn’t she?
An impish touch, especially with the furry hat! So good.
Thanks very much, Elena!
Nice smile and love the fur hat!
Yes, it’s a great hat! My hair looks like that if I let it grow.
Ooh, let it grow, Richard!
Just had it cut short except for a quiff. I’ve always wanted one.
Not my favourite of your images, if I am honest, but I agree totally with the hat and smile comments!
Oh well, you can’t win ‘em all. Thanks!
Hehe… Not saying I don’t like it, just that it’s not my fave!
Such a radiant smile and skin: beautiful!
Yes, Amparo’s great – and it was pure chance I got to photograph her. Which made it more fun.
Clever portrait with a background that is incredibly sympathetic. Definitely a “Guest”.
Thanks very much, John. Ha, ha, thanks.
Sounds like a very fair trade Richard.
Ha, yes! Actually I think I came out of it better – Amparo could have just asked the next likely person for directions, but I doubt I’d have got another smile like hers!
