Still Life #1, 2012 (digital print)
Untitled digital photograph, 2012
I don’t think Peter Hammill, Van der Graaf Generator’s singer and main songwriter, ever wrote a song about fruit. He’s written about oysters, octopus, squid, but not fruit (feel free to correct me). The song Still Life is a science fiction short story condensed into seven minutes and twenty-four seconds and explores the horrors of eternal life.
Still Life is the second track on Van der Graaf Generator’s 1976 album, Still Life. You can read more about it here.
Love the light in the first photo. Reminds me of old masters’ paintings. 🙂
Thanks Katie – that’s great – what I was thinking of when I took it was vanitas paintings. A friend of mine was obsessed with them for a while and maybe I was thinking about him. Anyway, that fruit has gone the way of all things…
I agree with Katie about the poetic light, especially where the apples are involved. also, the juxtaposition of the composed and found still life is interesting.
Thanks Katrien – haven’t thought about this until now, but one could be considered to be “old” in the way it’s composed (and the things that are the subject) and the other “new” (flagstones, municipal planting…) – perhaps that’s why I put them together.
The light in the first shot is great. Love the way the fruit fades into the shadows.
Thanks Stevie!
