Street Portrait (for and of David Hawker), 2012
At the point where The Strand morphs into Fleet Street, I saw David making a drawing of The Royal Courts of Justice. I was fascinated by his gaze and the quick, deft movements he made with his pencil. Luckily for me, David was happy to have his picture taken while he worked. I wish I’d had time to see the final drawing, (there is still a chance, because David’s work is used by London Tourist Board, among others, to illustrate their literature). Anyway, thanks for sparing the time to talk to me and for letting me take your photograph, David. Hope you like it.
Excellent shot… 🙂
Thanks, Drake! 🙂 David was a great subject.
I agree.
Thanks, John. I ummed and ahhed about this one for several weeks.
David was doing his best for you… what a classic look!
Yes, he was very generous – thanks, Shimon!
Absolutely priceless – I can only imagine what those fascinating eyes have seen!
Thanks so much, Patti! Yes, I wish I’d had more time with him.
Excellent model, excellent shot!
Thank you, sir!
I wonder if he would be my new guru.
Great portrait. Again this belongs in your catalog of “bests”.
Thanks so much, Terry. From my brief chat with David, I reckon he’d make a great drawing tutor.
Another wonderful, interesting person you’ve found to add to the Street Portrait’s gallery. You’ve captured David beautifully.
Thanks very much, EllaDee!
Beautiful intensity in that gaze.
Yes, I suspect that was hard-won. Thanks, Karen.
Really a great one.
Thanks very much, Evan. Love your blog by the way.
Thanks, Richard — I appreciate it! I’m really enjoying yours as well. Discovering a worldwide community of photographers has been the most unexpectedly rewarding part of starting the blog. . . .
Yes, there’s a lot of lovely people out there (and on here), and so far, WP seems like a pretty positive “environment” for meeting them.
Great detailing! An interesting character indeed! 🙂
Thank you, sir! 🙂
Fantastic..
Thanks so much, Cath! David was a great subject.
Excellent portrait!
Thanks very much, Naomi!
Oh great face Richard, if all those lines could tell a story?
Thanks very much, Leanne.
Great face, and wonderful photo. he reminds me of one of the characters in The Last Wave. He was Aboriginal. If you haven’t seen the movie it’s probably right up your alley.
Thanks very much. And thanks for the tip – I’ll look it up – sounds very interesting.
Excellent portrait. I like the upward looking pose, works well. A very photogenic face – weathered with age and wise looking.
David was drawing as I took the shots, but I didn’t include his hands, so that his expression would be more ambiguous. I agree – I think he has a beautiful face. Thanks, Stevie.
Outstanding. What a wonderful face.
Thanks, Melanie – that’s such a nice thing to say. Yes, I think David’s face is beautiful.
Looks like a guy that has lived life 🙂
Yes, indeed.
It is all about the eyes, isn’t it? Everybody has a story there, some more interesting than others – I always wonder what they were like as little kids…
I think you’re right – certainly in this case. That’s a really interesting exercise to do – and a great way to dream up stories…
wow! … to be able to spot a face like that among the city crowds…
I’m constantly on the lookout for interesting and stylish people (some days I’m better attuned than others). Thanks!
