Street Portrait (for and of Chris), 2013
This was taken today on Kingsway, London, UK. Chris was crossing the road when I spotted him. He looked great, so I asked for a portrait. He very generously agreed and suggested I took a shot from behind…

This is greatlove his hat
Thanks very much, John – yes, it’s great isn’t it – what you can’t see is that it was festooned with fake poppies. Nice statement.
This is a really fine portrait.
Thank you very much, Shimon – coming from you that is a really nice compliment.
Great portrait. What an expression.
Thanks very much, Chris. Yes, Chris did that and stepped forward into the frame, I backed away slightly and he advanced again 🙂 So I went with it because he filled the frame so nicely. He was another really great person.
Yes, the way the frame is filled really is wonderful. Then there’s that wrinkle on the side of his mouth. I’ll stop there with the gushing.
Fanastic! Your images, Chris, Chris’s hat, Free Pussy Riot! Very very cool.
Yes, Chris is ace isn’t he? Thanks very much!
I think at this stage, Richard, I’d like to volunteer to you as a subject. It’s a pity you’re on the other side of the world. I’m really enjoying your street portraits of this new kind.
I’d love to do it and thanks very much for the compliment!
I loved this… 🙂 Thank you dear Richard, well captured as always. Love, nia
Thank you so much, Nia! That’s very nice of you to say. 🙂
Tooo Cool. Love the homemade “free pussy riot” badge on the hat. What an interesting character.
Yes, indeed – Chris was really great fun, and definitely wanted to get his message across. Thanks so much, my friend.
Greta portrait… like many of the recent portraits you’ve shared… it says a lot but so tantalisingly little about the person and life behind the portrait.
Thanks very much, EllaDee. Yes, I’d love to spend longer with the people I photograph. Like with Chris – we had a bit of a chat, I took his picture and a few seconds later we were both lost in the crowd.
Great pick… the picture has an aura of integrity. Chris’ eyes are mischievous and patient at once… and the photographer has captured his’soul’ – well, almost! 🙂
Thanks so much, MJ! 🙂 A great compliment. Yes, Chris has such an interesting expression – there’s a certain amount of showmanship there, but also something deeper, I think.
that’s pretty cool…
Thanks so much, Carla!
Nice portraits – great hat! 😀
Yes, indeed! Thanks very much, Richard! 🙂
A pleasure, Richard! 🙂
Fantastic!
Thanks, Alison!
It looks as though Chris loved being at the focal point! I would say he is used to attracting attention! Great shot Richard.
Yes, ha ha! Thanks so much, Philippa.
Two hat portraits in a row! His is spectacular. Great framing.
Yes, and more to come! I’m into hats at the moment. Yes, it’s a work isn’t it? It looks casual, but I think Chris was very deliberate with his hat. Thanks very much, Deanne.
This makes my day.
(A) rich and wonderful portrait(s), and then some. Superb.
That’s so great to hear, Karen! I’m really pleased you like it. Thanks!
This makes my day Richard. Nothing like a close up, edges soft-full on intensity! Great!
That’s great to hear, Elena! I’m really glad i made your day. Thank you so much!
You really have an eye for people and your openness with them allows their character and individuality to shine through the portrait.
Thanks very much, Lena. That’s so nice of you. It helps that I only approach people who are stylish or interesting (or both)!
How many old men, precisely like Chris, I knew when I was a social worker (for the aged and disabled as they were called then) eons ago. His is the quintessential old man look … half-serious in a vaudeville sort of way … to get his point across. A really good portrait, I think. He is a full-frame kind of guy, and he knows it. Great!
Thanks very much, George! Yes, he wouldn’t allow me to make him anything less than full-frame – I thought he was great! Yes, I think you’re completely spot-on with your description of his look. Thanks!
Very interesting. Your images don’t tend to disappoint.
Thank you very much, Tebogo. I really like your writing.
Thank you. I appreciate your readership. I hope you have a fantastic week.
Great portrait. Something a little cowboyish about him.
Yes, Chris reminds me of the Lengendary Stardust Cowboy. Thanks so much, Stevie.
I love the look on his face, great expression.
Yes, indeed! Thanks very much, Leanne.
Fabulous! Wonderful character!
Yes, he was great! I really liked Chris. I keep my eye out for him when I’m doing my rounds.
