Self-portrait with office block, 2013
While I’ve been away, I’ve been experimenting with a 35mm lens. This is an early result. It’s strange using it after being so used to a 50mm. At first, there just seemed to be this irritating extra “bit” to every shot. My tendency in the past has been to see it, shoot it. But it is much more difficult to visualise a shot when using a wider angle lens…

This post is dedicated to Ashley Lily Scarlett from Syncopated Eyeball, for kind words and encouragement. And because I love her blog.
Looking forward to seeing more pictures with your new lens!
Thanks very much, Virginia!
You will love it in a few weeks!
Ha, ha, yes, I’m sure you’re right. Thanks very much, Chris.
Very cool pic Richard! Enjoy that lens.
Thanks very much, Elena!
Love this! Fascinating range of angles – I think you’re going to have fun!
Ha, thanks very much, Cath! I’m really glad you like it.
Oh, Richard, thank you so much, that’s so nice of you.
And you know I love self-portraits. 🙂
Hey, you’re welcome. 🙂 Yes, indeed 🙂
Nice to see (mostly) you.
(Ha), ha. Thanks very much!
Such a well composed self-portrait Richard! I hired a 35mm lens not so long ago and as you say, such a different experience. Have fun!
Thanks very much, Patti! Did you like it? I’m sure I used to own one in the nineteen-eighties, but those SLRs are long gone, and I was doing other stuff then.
I did like some of the results but it was such a different experience after working on auto pilot for so long with my usual lens. How are you adjusting?
Yes, I kind of feel like that – it takes a lot of concentration, because I’m so used to the 50mm, and the results so far have been so-so. But I won’t give up just yet.
ciao! your lens evolution inspires…you do know that you rock:)

Ha, ha, thanks! That’s so nice to hear 🙂
Wow! The artist at work! Love it!
Thanks very much, MJ! I’m really glad you like it.
Thank you for giving the shout out for Ashley’s blog. It’s beautiful… and there’s poetry too. 🙂
Yes, it’s a great blog isn’t it? Ashley’s ace!
Thanks very much you two! 🙂
Great shot, Richard! 😀
Thanks very much, Richard! 🙂
That’s a cool shot! Nicely composed , Richard. I think you’ve already got a sense of using it. New lenses are always fun, enjoy!
Thanks very much, Karen! Yes, I’m enjoying the challenge.
This is a great composition. Enjoy the new lens!
Thanks very much, Emily!
Love it. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with.
Thanks very much, Alison. Glad you like it.
I love Ashley although I rarely understand what she’s talking about. 😉 She gave me a couple of very “normal” photographs without eyeballs recently.
Why the 35mm? Unless you have a reason to use it. I am certain, however, that your photographs will be superb whatever lens you use. That, I can depend on.
Yes, me too. Ashley’s great.
Hmm, well I thought I should give myself a little creative shove – I found myself looking for the same shots over and over and thought I’d better do something about it. Thanks very much, George – that’s a lovely compliment.
Never mind, George, a lot of people don’t know what I’m talking about half the time. Hmm, must be time for an eyeball or six. 🙂
Chuckle… Chuckle… 😉
Wow. Excellent composition. Nice to see you again Richard!
Thanks – glad you like it. Nice to be seen!
Great shot! Yeah, going from a 50 to 35 is a transition. The 35 can be really nice too, though, and gives you a bit more room.
Thanks very much! Yes, I’m taking it out again tomorrow with a few locations in mind.
Nice to see (a bit of) you!
Ha, ha, thanks!
Nice self-portrait. I like the slightly confusing office reflection in the photo.
Thanks very much, Cardinal. Yes, it is due to standing in front of a heavily reflective set of windows and under what amounts to a mirrored overhang set at 45 degrees to it.
