– Street Portrait (for and of Joshua), 2014 –
Joshua was busy trying to find his way somewhere, when I bounded up to him and asked if I could take his portrait. He said yes, and then immediately turned to the side. It was such an interesting approach, and all the subsequent shots where I put myself in front of him weren’t as good. So, this is the first shot and my favourite. Thanks very much for stopping, Joshua! Hope you like your picture.

contemplating…
Yes, indeed.
Angelic, Richard! Joshua. The portrait reminds me of Vermeer’s open window paintings: Woman in Blue or Girl Reading a Letter. Lovely! T.
Vermeer painted the face towards the light but I see what you mean!
Thanks very much, T! That’s a lovely comparison. I really liked Joshua’s approach to this.
Lovd the light you use
Thanks so much, Chris!
Another portrait with a stunning sense of clarity and presence. Great pose, composition, tonal range.. This is a winner Richard.
Thanks so much, John. That’s such a nice compliment coming from you.
love it !
Great! I’m really glad you like it, Christophe!
You captured so well his spontaneous turn. Excellent profile, Richard [no surprise]. 🙂
Thanks so much, my friend 🙂
Very, very nice. Quiet yet full of personality.
Thanks very much, Jennifer!
The profile shot was a wonderful gift. I like it 🙂
Yes, I’m really grateful to Joshua for this. Thanks very much, EllaDee.
Great photo, Richard! The pose is what makes it! 🙂
(Is your email working, by the way?)
Thanks very much, Richard! (Yes, sorry, life’s been a bit hectic – I’ve emailed you)
No worries! 😀
This is an incredible Street Portrait. His hair is amazing. You really nailed the focus too. I love that. I love the feeling when you ask someone to take their photo and they say yes.
Thanks very much, Jonathan. Yes, Joshua’s hair is great isn’t it? Yes, me too – I’m addicted to taking street portraits – it gives me a real buzz.
I like this. He has a pensive quality. Nice.
Thanks very much, Carissa.
That’s a great shot, Richard
Thanks so much, Alison.
Wow!! Beautiful!!
Thanks so much, Ellen!
This is a great shot. I’m still working up the nerve to ask people around here. I’ve seen two or three amazing looking people this week, and chickened out at the last minute.
Thanks very much, Shane. It’s not easy taking that first step, for sure. (And I still get nervous.) You have an honest, open, friendly face – that counts for a lot when approaching people, I think. I really like your street shots, so I’d be very interested to see a portrait.
Thanks Richard, I really appreciate the advice and confidence boost. I’m keen to start, so it’s only a matter of time.
I’ll keep watching and learning from you for the time being.
I’m sure Joshua will love this portrait. Both he, and it, are gorgeous!
Thanks so much, Alex! That’s lovely to hear!
A really beautiful portrait!
I prefer profile portraits of myself for some reason, perhaps he does too.
Thanks very much, Karen! That’s interesting – Joshua was pretty definite about the pose.
An air of mystery to the ‘turning’ away….the photograph captures a lot of power in his gaze.
Yes, indeed. Thanks very much, Steven.
Soo good in so many ways.
Thanks so much, Elena!
Joshua has a natural instinct for modeling. And, a beautifully sculpted face. I’d bet not many people compose your shot for you! Chuckle… It worked, Joshua. I like this one very much.
Yes, I think you’re right – he seemed like he could be a model. Ha, you’re right, not many people compose my shots – Joshua was an exception and he made it work.
Joshua looks very contemplative, and relaxed. I love the angle you’ve used, maybe the first shot was more spontaneous, as this looks very natural. I also like the tone and focus you’ve used.
Yes, indeed. Thanks very much, Cheryl. I’m really glad you like it. Joshua was a great person to photograph – very natural and uncompromising.
Hi Richard, yes, I’ve been reading other people’s comments and I agree, he seems to know how to model naturally.
Those fabulous features! A perfectly sculptured profile, and the light!
Yes, indeed! Thanks very much, Patti! Are you “coming back” soon?
ciao! the angle is fantastic as are the stripes of his jacket and the background. you got just the right composition…click 🙂
