As a way of pushing myself to create images using different media, I am taking part in the Brooklyn Art Library’s Sketchbook Project. The eventual aim is to create a new preliminary drawing/ digital construct on which to base a new painting.
One of the conditions I set myself was to make the sketchbook entirely visual (my usual practice is to write loads of notes). So far there has been a fair amount of back and forth between work in the sketchbook and using Affinity to manipulate images on my laptop.
You can sign up to the project, receive a blank sketchbook, fill it up and submit it to the world’s largest collection of sketchbooks here: www.brooklynartlibrary.com/sbp
What you have done so far with your sketchbook is fantastic… and inspiring. I look forward to following it. And, without fully realising I’ve been needing, looking for a creative project. So, I’m going to sign up as well. Thanks for much for the heads up ♡
Thanks very much, EllaDee – it’s been really interesting – I’ve tried to do the whole thing without using words in the main body of the book (I usually fill them up with ramblings etc) – so I’ve been thinking in a more visual way about what I’m doing. Think I’m going to continue once the project’s finished (I have a huge pile of unused sketchbooks – seem to buy one every time I go for supplies 🙂 )…
[…] A few years back Anne Lawson proposed The Sisterhood of the Travelling Sketchbook just as the G.O. and I were settling after relocating from city to country-coast followed by an around Australia roadtrip, and the timing didn’t feel right. Two years later, cue aha moment when I read a post by Richard Guest of the blog The Future Is Papier Mâché about the Brooklyn Art Library Sketchbook Project. […]
This is fascinating.
Thanks very much Joseph!
Interesting project.

Thanks very much Hedy – much appreciated! Hope you’re having a good week!
Im working on my second sketchbook with them right now! Always great to see what another artist does with the same book. Thanks for sharing!
Love what you did with your first book. It’s a really interesting process isn’t it?
It really is! I love making something that I now people are going to be able to physically interact with and hold in their hands – it’s really different from any other type of art in that way in my opinion
Yes, totally – tactility is quite unusual. I love how all the books look on the library shelves – all that potential. I’d love to visit one day.
[…] and applied the same method. You can see the original digital construct the painting was based on here. Less of the initial image […]
