Hello folks! I see it’s been about a year since I last posted – it was meant to be more frequent, but life got in the way in horrible ways. Anyway, here we are and I’ve decided to return in a rambling, semi-incoherent manner – I’m telling myself it’s a tip of the hat to the early days of blogging…

I’ve been listening to The Fall, Danger Mouse & Black Thought, and Bob Marley by the way, drinking lots of tea and reading music books…

9/10 Ends (Lone Guitar), And I Am Bereft, graphite and water soluble pencil and acrylic on artboard, 297 x 420 mm, 2022

I’ve updated my website, and will continue to post works etc to my instagram account, but I’m keeping The Future Is Papier Mâché for the rambling, incoherent diaristic stuff. Hope you’re all well and enjoying life.

C Type Print

October’s Print of the Month is now available to buy here.

Sparrowfall (II) was one of the first steps in me making a transition from street photography to painting. It’s constructed from elements of street shots taken in early 2015. There are two versions of the image – this is my current favourite. Sparrowfall (II) will be available until the end of October 2018.

Untitled (Project Two), 2017 by Barry Comer and Richard Guest

Untitled (Project Two), 2017 by Barry Comer and Richard Guest

This image has been cooking for a good long while; Barry and I initiated our second project in September 2015…and finally, here’s the result.

Our previous project started with an exchange of self-portraits, and through a game of exquisite corpse in which each of us added and subtracted elements, resulted in two distinct images. For project two, we decided to follow the same procedure, but make the end result one image. And kicked things off with a still life…

Here are some of the intermediate stages:

This is a project by Barry Comer and Richard Guest.

Barry and I have never met in the physical world. He is based in Louisville, Kentucky and I live on the edge of London. I have long admired his drawings. So I jumped at the chance when Barry suggested we work together.

Since May 2012, I have been approaching strangers in the street and asking if I can take their photograph. Thankfully everybody here said yes.

If you are interested in learning a bit of background to any of the shots above, a quick search of TFIPM by the person’s name should bring up the original post. This post is dedicated to George Skeggs, my first street portraitee – without him there would have been no beginning…

Then and Now, 2016– Then and Now, 2016 –

On 20th December 2014, Ashley Lily Scarlett and I started a conversation in pictures called Between Scarlett and Guest. Ashley is based in Sydney, Australia and I’m in Beckenham, UK – we have never met. But we trade pictures on an a sometimes daily basis.

Below is my side of the conversation from 11th September 2016 to 3rd February 2017. It incorporates archive images and those taken specifically in response to one of Ashley’s shots.

You can start “reading” Between Scarlett and Guest from any point (and read backwards or forwards) and it should still make some kind of sense.

Alice and Caner, 2016– Alice and Caner, 2016 –

Alice and Caner were in a large group of people on Great Queen Street, and fully engrossed in a conversation. Sensing a brief lull, I lunged in and asked them for a few shots. They were lovely about it. This is the first shot I took and is my favourite. Thanks very much, Alice and Caner! Hope you like your picture.

It’s been over two years since I last posted a double portrait – I have no idea why – must take some more…anyway, the one before this was this one: https://thefutureispapiermache.wordpress.com/2014/03/20/double-street-portrait-19/.
