Street Portrait (for and of Terry) #1, 2013

The light was fading on Monday, so I was trying to capture a few atmospheric street shots when I spotted Terry up a ladder. I must have taken six or seven photos of him from different angles. As is my custom, I had earbuds in, so I didn’t hear what Terry was saying, but I could see he was talking to me. Out came the buds, and we had a leisurely chat about what I was doing. Which was great for me – I love talking about photography. Hopefully I didn’t bore Terry too much, and he did let me take his portrait. This is my favourite of the two shots. Thanks very much, Terry! Hope you like your pictures.

Street Portrait (for and of Harmony), 2013

What I usually get when I ask someone for a portrait is a straight yes or no. This was a lot more fun – Harmony agreed to the shot “but only if you can do it before that light turns green” (pointing to the pedestrian crossing light). I love a challenge. And I love Harmony’s look – full of codes and wonderful textures. I’m also extremely jealous of her quiff – I just got one and it’s very much on the nursery slopes at the moment. Anyway, thanks very much, Harmony! Hope you like your picture.

Street Portrait (for and of David Charkham), 2013

David exudes so much style that I zeroed in on him from quite a distance. But the devil is, of course, in the detail. I was thrilled when David agreed to a portrait – this is my favourite of several shots. Thanks very much, David! Hope you like your picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Derek), 2013

Derek walked past me in the street behind St. Martin In the Fields Church. It took me a few seconds to register his innate style – a modern take on classic British modes of dress. Once I did, I doubled back sharpish and asked for a shot. His shoes were incredible (but you’ll have to take my word for it, because I had the wrong lens on my camera and no time to change it). Anyway, thank you so much for letting me take so many shots of you Derek! Hope you like the picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Adam), 2013

Do I need to explain why I asked Adam for a photograph? – amazingly stylish, single-minded and witty to boot – he was great fun to shoot. This is my favourite of the shots I took. The jacket is a World War I officer’s tunic. Thanks very much, Adam! Hope you like your picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Mark), 2013

This was taken 5th February – it was a busy day for portraits. The pavement was busy as well, but Mark stood out immediately and I was delighted when he agreed to a few shots. This is my favourite. What a great look! A man out of time. Thanks very much, Mark! Hope you like your picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Amparo), 2013

This was taken today on Kingsway. Amparo wanted to know the way to Trafalgar Square, so I traded the information for a photograph (well, two), and boy did she have a great smile. Thanks very much, Amparo! Hope  my directions got you there and that you like your picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Amy), 2013

The same day I photographed Fabio and Flavio, I spotted Amy outside a shop on Longacre. She had what I thought of as a classic look with a twist – and I hope she won’t mind me saying this – the aura of a Hitchcock heroine. Well, style to spare! Thanks very much for letting me take the shots, Amy! Hope you like the picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Grant), 2013

It was his hat and the cut of his clothes that got my attention. I tailed Grant from a point on Lamb’s Conduit Street to somewhere near High Holborn. And he was great about me taking a few shots. This is my favourite, for his frank expression. Thanks very much, Grant! Hope you like your picture.

Street Portrait (for and of Fabio), 2013

Street Portrait (for and of Flavio), 2013

The fourth of February was a ridiculously good day for me photographically, and it started with me meeting Fabio and Flavio on what is effectively a traffic island with a pub on it near Haymarket. They were both unbelievably cool and definitely on their way somewhere. So I was really please when they very generously agreed to a few shots. Thank you both very much! I hope you like your pictures.
