– Street Portrait (for and of John Pannell), 2014 –
John was crossing the road on Great Queen Street, London, UK, when I spotted him. It was the end of a not particularly productive day, so he saved it for me. I loved John’s sense of style – it seemed like a natural extension of his personality. He was really good about me taking a few shots – this is the last one I took and my favourite. Thanks very much for stopping, John! Hope you like your picture.

Thank you, Paulette.
A nice portrait, Richard, and an interesting character. There’s a lot of history behind those eyes! 🙂
Thanks very much, Richard. Yes, indeed.
I like the portrait and your use of DoF.
Thank you, Cardinal – glad you like it. John was a great subject.
His eyes thats what is so striking
Yes, I love that twinkle – John was really nice, and great about me taking a load of shots.
Yeah he looks at real ease
He remind me of the guy who plays the violin.
Who’s that then?
Sorry . Nigel Kennedy? (I think it’s his name)
Aha, yes, I can see a bit of a resemblance too. Thanks very much, Stephen.
I’m beginning to wonder if you have a knack for finding interesting people, or for finding the interesting in people. Or both. Either way, you’re quite skilled. No shortage of interesting about John, or his portrait. This is one of my favorites of yours.
Thanks so much, Alex – that’s a lovely compliment(s). Glad to hear this is a favourite – it means I’m moving in the right direction.
Now that’s a brilliant portrait, Richard! 🙂
Wow, thanks so much, Marina! That’s so nice to read!
simply brilliant
Thanks so much, John!
Great portrait, Richard.
Thank you very much!
A striking person indeed and you’ve done a fabulous job Richard, always!
Thanks so much, Arjun! John was such a nice man and I think it comes through in this portrait.
It does. Easy guy, sorted out…that’s the impression he made on me.
Very enigmatic, if slightly puzzled expression? Really like it. He certainly looks like an interesting kind of chap!
Thanks very much, Nancy! Yes, I’m sure he was a little puzzled by me. I’m really pleased John agreed to the shot.

I love his expression.
Me too – it makes me smile.

You seem to have gone beyond capturing the simply the visual with this image, it is very multi-dimensional. A huge congratulations in being spotlighted in Round the World in Twelve Photos with this pic.
Thanks so much, EllaDee. John was a great subject. Yes, it’s really nice to be featured.
I absolutely love this one, Richard! Just beautiful.
Thanks so much, Karen – I’m really glad to hear that – what a compliment!
Fantastic portrait Richard – you’ve captured a real depth of character, a bit like showing several sides of the diamond at once..
That’s a lovely analogy, thanks very much, Cath.
It’s excellent, Richard. There’s a great deal of expression in that face.
Thanks so much, Ashley. John was ace.
❤ i'm speechless
Thanks very much!

Love this!
Glad you like it. Thanks very much!
Nice portrait. He has something of grizzled and knowing world-weary looking about him. I wonder if he has some good tales to tell.
Thanks very much, Stevie. I bet he would. John was also very stylishly dressed – he stood out from the crowd.
Congratulations, Richard, on being featured by WordPress. This street portrait was the one in the selection that really stood out – and a bonus that it comes from a familiar photographer!
Thank you, Mike.
The direction of John’s hair strengthens an already interesting composition!
I hadn’t noticed that, but yes! Thanks very much, Elena!
ciao! what’s in a face…his exudes a possessed charm. a great capture.
thebestdressup
Thanks very much!
I love his expression.
Me too! Thanks very much!
Thank you for the like on a current post. Like Arjun said, means a lot coming from a master like you. I think Arjun is one, too.
You’re most welcome. Thanks so much – I’m humbled by your comment, but I think you’re right about Arjun.
Why is it that men age so wonderfully? Great shot!
Yes, John’s a good-looking man for sure. To be fair not all men do (politicians over here tend to look like mutants over a certain age – it’s the poison coming out) and a lot of women look brilliant as they age.
I dunno…I feel as though men have the advantage although NOW I am going to do some UK google political snooping …hehe, the poison. : )
Something very sweet and earnest in the expression you caught. Really nice!
John was just great – not sure what he made of me. I love his expression too. Thanks very much, Jennifer.
I think Johnny Halliday would be lucky to fill those boots! If only picture had music this one would probably boogie all night! Good work fella. May The Cross RIP! X
Thanks very much, JPX.
i have the pleasure to call this guy a friend and mentor, and mentalist. yo are so right, his eyes give a glimpse into an amazing character. A legend in fact. He would have you, and especially any of your girlfriend in laughter wrapped around his little pinkies.
I went everywhere with him. He came to my stag, and i have never laughed so much in my life.
And if you want to see more of this character, have a look here. https://www.facebook.com/jezjowett/posts/10155749826070831
Fantastic! Thanks very much for your comment, Jez. This is one of my favourites of my portraits.
