The Future Is Papier Mâché started out as a scrapbook of ideas and images for a novel. Sometime around 2012 the focus shifted; I started to interrogate the city with my camera. And I haven’t stopped. Street Photography is at the root of all the images on the blog. There are three main strands to images I present on TFIPM: candid shots, street portraits and paintings (digital and analogue).
Self portrait with city, 2012

Hello Philippa
Thanks very much! Of course I accept – it’s very nice of you to have thought of my blog!
All the best,
Richard
May I just say that I admire your work and I am very happy that we connected through wordpress.
Peace.
Thank you so much, Sam. The feeling’s mutual – I often find your work very moving and love visiting your blog.
I’ve been meaning to ask you about what your process is when you take photos of people in the street. Is it as easy as “May I take a photograph of you?” Do you give them your blog address/a card?
I’ve been fascinated with people who I find asleep in public transportation. 🙂
peace.
Yes, it’s pretty much that – I tell them why I want to take their picture, ask them if it’s OK, take the shot, then tell them about the blog and give them a business card (I’ve just had some new ones printed up with a description of the blog in four words, the blog address and one of five images on the reverse). If everything’s OK, I post the image. If for any reason, the person is not happy I’ll either delete the image or agree not to post it.
People asleep are really interesting – they do things with their faces they would never do when they are awake – great subject. 🙂
Love your “self portrait with city” sums it all up. Cheers Sue
Thanks very much, Sue. Love your work and blog!
cool stuff man. Peace
Thanks! I really like your photography. You too.
Lol thanks again please to hear it! Peace

Hi, you’re most welcome – love your blog. Glad you enjoyed mine. Cheers.
Your photos are so interesting, great blog! 😀
Thank you so much – love your blog too! 🙂
Wow, fab blog. One of your subjects, Nina, used to work in the office next to mine at my old work. What a weird coincidence, she is actually always that stylish and a super lovely girl.
Thank you so much! Yes, I can believe Nina is always that stylish – her clothes look like a natural extension of her personality. A weird coincidence indeed! Love your blog.
I find your focal length, I mean your ego length, amusing…first class!
What?
As is…
when is street photography not street photography? when you take fake shots. i.e. Daniel. Get out on the streets. taste the fear. smell the flesh. experience the paranoia. take the risk. If you don’t it’s all staged. ergo, not street photography. Learn from Cartier-Bresson. Document that decisive moment. don’t. don’t, fake.
I don’t fake anything – the picture of Daniel is a portrait. If you want edgy shots, take them yourself. Don’t tell me what to do on my own blog. Or do we all have to take the same photographs?
when you call it ‘street photography’ it should be. if not call it what it is. simple!
The photographs are taken on the street, so the term is descriptive. Street Photography is whatever we want it to be. You have a very narrow mindset. And what you consider to be edgy now will be comfy in years to come. Good luck with smelling the flesh.
Now calm down dear :0
You’re a profoundly stupid time-waster. If you don’t like my blog there are plenty of others to look at. Goodbye.
It was not my intention to offend you or your work. I was merely attempting to correct your description. My apologies for offending. I do think you work, on the main, is good. Choi.

Love your work too!
Thanks for your visit and nice words.
(I’m not sure about that button, can’t find it myself 😉 but some people receive e-mails, the ones that don’t have an own blog in WordPress)
Thank you!
You’re most welcome.
(Righto! I’ll log out of WP and see if I can’t hook myself an email subscription)
Ha, ha, let me know if you succeeded.
Yes, done! I’m very happy.
Great!
I just discovered how you can manage to receive an e-mail: in your Reader you can click on Blogs I follow, then click on edit and change the settings and you’re done.
Thanks very much for that – I shall investigate – I can’t be doing with the reader! 🙂
🙂
I simply love your sensitive beautiful portraits, but can’t find anywhere to like or comment… have I missed something????
Thank you very much, Valerie. Yes, it’s not the most obvious feature of the theme. Next to the date on each post there’s a small “speech balloon” with a number in it. If you click on this it will take you to the post, where you can read and comment.
great, thank you Richard….
Hey! I’ve just nominated you for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award! Your blog is inspirational because of your excellent photographs, and it also shows that there are great and kind people out there with open minds (here referring to your subjects) 😀
Thanks so much! How nice! Yes, they are a great bunch of people – I love Londoners. I will, of course, spread the love. 🙂
Lovely! I hope to visit London someday…seems like a fascinating and affluent place 🙂
Yes, it’s a great city…fascinating for sure, but I’m not sure about affluent – some areas are (but they’re not so interesting IMHO).
What’s IMHO?
In my humble opinion.
Ah, I see.
Whoops, wrong word/meaning! I was thinking worldly. Hm, that was a bit embarrassing 🙂 haha
Oh, I do that all the time 🙂 Yes, it’s certainly that! A fantastic mix of people.
🙂
And you’re welcome! 🙂
Richard, I have nominated your blog for the Very Inspiring Blogger Award – http://lenadealmeida.wordpress.com/2013/03/02/unexpected-gift/

Mr. your photo of Damon Albarn is fantastic. Could you post it in full color?
Thanks very much, Dan. I’m not sure about the colour – it needs some adjustment. If I get the time, I’ll have a go.
Hello Dan, just to let you know the colour shot is now up – check the latest post…
Hi Richard thanks for being a visitor (note the clever avoidance of the word guest) to dragonshades. Love the photos and your observations.
Ha, ha, thanks very much! Glad you like it.
Hi, Richard, I’ve seen dropped in from time to time but never posted here, but it just hit me, maybe a little late, your portraits, in my mind, rival the work of Cecil Beaton, and of course beat him for being yourself. Absolutely fantastic work. I love your street photos. I can’t help (wickedly) wanting to see you do some Rolling Stone stuff too, though. You’re pretty awesome.
BTW, is there somewhere I can check out your writing? If it’s as good as this stuff, I’m sure it’s worth while. A movie? That would be a good combo maybe for you. Anyway, I love what I’m seeing now. Thanks.
Thanks so much, Scotch! That’s a huge compliment! I’ll have a think about Rolling Stone.
Yes, the writing is in two places. There are novel extracts under the novel extracts heading at the top of the page – for some reason you have to hover your mouse pointer over the heading and you’ll get a list of extracts – click on one and you’ll get an extract. Haven’t managed to fix this yet 😦 The other place is in the main body of the blog. If you go to the Tags, tags, tags bit at the bottom of the page and click on Fiction you will get all my recent novel extracts in reverse chronological order. They don’t form a coherent narrative – they just appealed to me at the time of posting.
Right now, I’m working on something episodic that will be exclusive to the blog and will have a coherent narrative (of sorts).
I’m really glad you like my stuff. Thanks for all the compliments.
Cool! Looking forward to catching your episodic fiction too. (With photos?) Keep up the good shoots!
Thanks for the Follow on my Poetry/Blog! Your work is intriguing and good luck with everything! Much peace and bliss on your future endeavors!
You’re welcome. Thanks very much!
Popped over thanks to the feature on LCP. Great atmospheric stuff that allows the mind to think. MM 🍀
Yes, Leanne’s great isn’t she? Thanks very much, Mick! That’s a very nice compliment.
Saw your stuff on Leanne Cole’s blog. Your work is amazing! Thank you for sharing 🙂
Hey, thanks very much! Dig your blog! 🙂
Hi Richard, thanks for the follow. I really enjoy your blog and look forward to your posts
