Everything and Nothing, 2012
This was taken in Beckenham, UK.
Everything and Nothing is a sort of greatest hits album by David Sylvian.
It was released in 2000 and collects together some of his greatest songs (post Japan), along with unreleased material. Sylvian’s career has had a trajectory comparable in some ways to Scott Walker’s – in recent years his work has been willfully difficult and stunningly beautiful. Everything and Nothing is pre-difficult and if you fancy dipping a toe in the water, I would recommend this as a place to start. The songs on here are sumptuous, artful and filled with longing.
Track-listing and album details can be found here.
My favourite track on the album is the first: The Scent of Magnolia.
In our house this CD can be found: dining room, top shelf, right-hand bookshelves.

Thanks to John and Deanne and Terry for title shenanigans and Richard at CK Ponderings for being a super-cool collaborator. Our next collaboration will be posted tomorrow – watch this space.
A fascinating shot, Richard! So much to see (and not see) :-). The title works perfectly with the image. Very intriguing.
Thanks very much, Melanie! 🙂
Being a font fan, I love this shot.
Thanks very much – I’m really glad you like it.
There is a wisp of a self portrait here – Richard is a dish. 😉
Ha, ha, I swear I didn’t take it for that reason. 🙂
Love the bleed/crop!
Thanks very much, Elena! I wondered about putting a frame round it, but took the easy route instead.
Great shot. I love the layers of image and text.
Thanks very much, Chris. I’m a sucker for reflections and fonts – they do a lot of heavy lifting in an image.
I must find out more about David Sylvian… sounds intriguing!
If you like his voice, you’ll probably like everything he’s done – some tracks are achingly opulent, others sparse, dry and heartfelt – I favour the left-field stuff (same as with Scott Walker) of harsh and brittle notes, scrambled guitars and avant-jazz.
I do like Scott Walker… I’ve just googled David an I know him from Japan! I’m definitely going to get some of his music – what do you recommend?
If you like Japan, I’d start with Brilliant Trees, which was his first solo LP. Secrets of the Beehive is lush and dark and Dead Bees On A Cake is very upbeat and beautifully “orchestrated”. Of the later stuff, I’d choose Blemish – it’s odd, but ace.
On my way to Amazon!
Intriguing image, I like the gravity of the white rectangle. I keep trying to look at the rest of the image, but the rectangle pulls my eyes towards it.
Thanks, Stevie – yes, I love the negativity of that white shape – it sucks the whole image into it.
I really do enjoy these, the glass reflections, I love trying to work out what is through the glass and what is reflected.
Thanks, Leanne – I’m really glad you like them – I’m sure there are loads more to come. I don’t seem to be able to leave reflections alone.
That’s good, I look forward to them
