– Street Portrait (for and of Gus), 2014 –
So, ten minutes before I photographed Chris I was wandering Denmark Street on the lookout for musicians. I was just about to give up when I saw Gus coming out of one of the guitar shops. It’s not the first time I’ve seen him. Last time I wasn’t quick enough to catch him before he went back inside. Gus was great about having his photograph taken – thanks Gus – I’m glad I finally got you! Hope you like your picture. It was the fourth and final shot, and is my favourite.

Your street portraits are really great. When I see a post from you, I always look forward to seeing the content.
Thanks very much, Christopher. That’s a lovely thing to read. Love your blog.
Nice light effect. Looks like a friendly guy!
Thanks very much, Ellen. Yes, Gus was great.
This is such a lovely warm photo, Richard.
I am regularly sent to Denmark St to buy new guitar strings for my husband, god knows what he does with them all. Anyway, the little packets are beautiful and I just added a piece to my map yesterday.
Stories bleeding into each other again.
Thanks so much, Alison. Yes, those packets have such a nice aesthetic – there’s nothing else like them. Yes, indeed…so interesting how things intersect.
Love the diagonal light! And his smile.
Thanks very much! Yes, Gus has a great smile.
Great street portrait. You don’t see a lot of moustaches around (except for in November).
Thanks very much, Cardinal. Very true – it’s quite difficult to carry off a convincing ‘tache. Beards seem very fashionable at the moment.
Gus looks very dapper, almost like D’Artagnan, I love the characters you meet. Your photographs always tell such rich stories.
Yes, he was – the sweater is a beautiful bright red, but I preferred the shot in B&W. Thanks very much, Cheryl – that’s a lovely thing to read!
Lovely portrait, Richard. I like the way the light is playing across the photo! 🙂
Thanks very much, Richard! 🙂
Yes, I agree with Richard: the play of light on Gus’ sweater really energizes the image.
Thanks very much, John.
A very friendly portrait Richard and, as said earlier, the light is so striking.
Yes, Gus was a really relaxed friendly person. Thanks very much, Patti.
The slice of light really is great! The subtle background highlights frame everything so wonderfully, too. Very nice.
Thanks so much, Karen.
Great portrait. Love the old school tash!
Thanks very much, Stevie. Yes, me too. Another thing I can never pull off.
A casual classic.
Thanks very much, Elena.
Oh, I like the light and shadow here. Does great things for his hair and his face. 🙂
Yes, normally I don’t go a bundle on very sunny days for portraits, but this time it kind of worked. Gus was a great subject.
Beautiful lighting
Thanks very much, Lam.
Lovely, friendly shot!
Thanks so much, Cath! Gus was a really nice person, so I guess he brought it out in me 🙂
I like this guy too 🙂 It’s funny, somehow he seems Scandinavian but maybe it is just the street rubbing off on him! Lovely snap again, Richard! 🙂
Thanks so much, Gigi! I can definitely confirm that Gus is not Scandinavian – or if he is he’s got the accent down pat.
Nice and gentle. His look goes with how you shot him. Great job again!
Thanks so much, Jennifer! Much appreciated.
